Hello, beautiful people! Today I’m sharing my R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow Review with you. I fell in love with Fembot from this line, which inspired me to try more shades. I’m all about a beautiful multichrome eyeshadow that makes my eyes pop.

About R.E.M. Beauty

REM Beauty is a brand owned by the popular musician Ariana Grande. It’s 100% cruelty free, 100% vegan, and PETA approved makeup.

I’m a fan of their Honeymoon High highlighter that I use as a highlighting blush. The Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows, Pinking of U Hypernova Satin Matte blush, and the On Your Collar Plumping Lip Glosses are all favorites of mine too.

I actually use the On Your Collar Plumping Lip Glosses on my lips during the day as a way to minimize biting my lips. And it gives me a little dopamine boost to make my brain happy.

About R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows

R.E.M. Beauty states that the Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow is a very pigmented, high performance liquid shadow in natural velvety matte and multidimensional intense glitter finishes. It lists the benefits as long wearing, blends seamlessly, crease and transfer resistant, waterproof, lightweight formula, high impact color, and non drying.

R.E.M. Beauty suggests that this product can be used as an eyeshadow or to create graphic liner looks. They say use a finger to apply for a diffused look, or use the doe foot as liner.

Previously, the R.E.M. Beauty liquid eyeshadows were two separate product lines and they were merged to form the Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow line.

These eyeshadows are touted as cruelty free and vegan.

Clean Ingredients

Ulta lists the brand has having clean ingredients. Here are the current ingredients:

Isododecane, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Silica, Isononyl Isononanoate, Hydrogenated Styrene/Isoprene Copolymer, Boron Nitride, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tin Oxide, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow Shade Discussion

BRB is more like a pink beige matte to me and it is neutral / warm, but definitely pulls warm on my skin tone. If you’re someone who loves a pinky nude lip like Fenty Blaz’d Donut, this eyeshadow gives similar same vibes. I don’t know how or why they describe it as a pink mauve, because it’s definitely lacking mauve tones as far as I can tell.

TY is a cool toned dark brown matte It’s great for adding depth or using as a liner. I demo it as a liner in the video I created.

Fembot is my favorite shade in this line! In the original formula, I panned my first Fembot and purchased a second one prior to purchasing the new formula. I would describe it as having a beige base with a pink to blue to violet shimmer and shift multichrome. Metallic pink is selling it short. It also makes my blue-green eyes pop. I brought this shade with me on my trip to New Zealand. See my Best Makeup for Travel.

Muse is a metallic bronze. It’s a complex brown shade with subtle gold, pink, and bronze shimmer in it. I found it layers nicely with the matte eyeshadows.

Horoscope, described as metallic mauve, on its way here and I will update this article with swatches and thoughts on that shade as well.

I find it very interesting that there 4 pink shades in this line. Actually, I love that. It’s so much better than being dominated by all repetitive brown hues.

Shade Range Improvement

I was deeply disappointed to see most of the ‘fun’ bright colors disappear from the R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows collection. The teal, purple, and black were removed. It is my hope that they’ll increase the shade range to add more duochrome / multichrome fun and bright shades to the very conservative color line up.

R.E.M. Wicked Elphaba Makeup Look

In the green makeup look above, I put together this look using the r.e.m. beauty x Wicked elphaba makeup collection which contained:

• Black is this Year’s Pink (black to berry) color changing lip balm
• Not Your Basic Witch (metallic olive-black shimmer) eyeliner
• Magic Unleashed (forest green and champagne gold) liquid eyeshadow
• Destined to Fly (deep berry with subtle plum red) lip and cheek stick

I bought this collection explicitly for Magic Unleashed. Not Your Basic Witch and Destined to Fly are both lovely makeup items from the set. Black is this Year’s Pink is a gimmicky ph color changing lip balm. It’s cute but doesn’t do much for me. I really don’t like ph / color changing products because they often turn a garish bright hue on me.

BlackMilk is my favorite fashion brand. They’re based in Australia and I love the the wearable art that they make. And I really enjoy their video game inspired clothing. I’ve been struggling with body, so it really helps that I have clothing that makes me feel good when I’m down. And in particular, the Boo print makes me happy. It’s a bit nostalgic for the simpler days of my childhood in the 90s, playing Super Mario Brothers 3 with my cousin and brother.

R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow Formula Review

While I purchased the original R.E.M. Beauty Liquid Eyeshadows, I only chose shimmery, iridescent, or metallic shades. I never purchased any of their mattes. The original formula could be worn without primer, but I still prefer to use primer with it to prevent any fallout.

The mattes in the new formula are finicky. They blend out easily for the first layer. If you have to add subsequent layers after the first has dried, it’s more difficult to blend out; it will stick to itself and cause lifting in places. I don’t like the matte formula on its own at all.

The shimmer shades in the new formula is very similar to the old formula in my experience. I have no issues applying it and blending it out. You can use your fingers or you can use a brush.

As I only have one shade, Fembot, in both the new and old formula, I do want to mention that the new formula seems to have more shimmer, but both are beautiful. It’s my favorite shade in the whole collection and if you only try one color, I highly recommend Fembot. Between the two mattes that I tried, I think TY is my favorite.

If you are looking for simple one and done eyeshadows, shimmer shades like Fembot will make you happy. If you’re looking at the mattes, they’re more finicky to work with, so I would only try one or two to see if you like the formula. Also, I recommend using primer, especially with shimmer shades, to prevent any fallout.

I highly recommend Fembot, as I’ve now purchased it three times.

How to Apply R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows

I prefer to apply the R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadow matte shades by dolloping some product onto the back of my hand and then dipping my brush into it, then applying it onto my eyes. With the shimmer shades, I sometimes apply directly with the doe foot applicator, but honestly prefer to use a brush or my fingertips.

Old vs. New

As I’ve mentioned, I love the R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows. I did a quick swatch comparison with my old shades vs. the new. I included the limited edition Wicked collection liquid eyeshadow in the new formula as well. Wicked Magic Unleashed is described as a forest green and champagne gold shimmer. My guess is that REM Beauty is going to release limited edition fun colors like the Wicked release in the future.

A Note About Lighting

My favorite type of lighting is indoors in indirect sun, while outdoors in indirect sun definitely makes me appear my fairest. Lighting makes all the difference in photos. I’ve had people ask me if I’m wearing self tanner because of how my skin looks in outdoor photos vs indirect sun photos.

Self tanner and I are not besties because it requires weekly maintenance to have a gorgeous self tan. My friends Nattie and Jenni spend a lot of time to be the gorgeous golden goddesses that they are. I’ve tried it a few times and I’m open to trying it again in the future, but I genuinely enjoy embracing the skin I’m in and being fair toned. Most self tanners turn orange on my skin tone.

Final Thoughts

I love the new R.E.M. Beauty Starlet Liquid Eyeshadows. If you like simple eye makeup that you can apply one color with your fingertips and get maximum impact, you might enjoy this formula. However, if you’re looking for bold colors, skip this line. They have lots of safe hues and a few lovely iridescent shades, but the most bold hue is TY.
