Probably works even better than T-Gel
After T-Gel was discontinued I tried a few other things and nothing worked very well. I found this product and it costing 1/4th of what the price gouging of T-Gel is going for and decided to give it a try. Male, medium length hair. I found that after 5+ weeks of using it, the first few weeks every day to get back to normal and now just every other day or so it works as good as T-Gel or even better. No more buildup, flakes, and itches are minor if at all. I wash and rinse my hair with cool water and then use a cheesy grocery store brand conditioner and all is well. Some of the reviews here complained about the smell – “it smells like someone is tarring a roof”. There is a little smell, no worse than T-Gel, and actually maybe not as bad. Once you rinse your hair, the smell goes away. I had the wife unit verify this. After a few days of shampooing with it you don’t even notice the smell. I’ll take 3 1/2 minutes of smell vs. an itchy scalp any day. As an experiment I have 1/2 bottle of T-Gel left and used it for a few days. Yep, it smells worse. Glad I found this, it fixed an annoying problem.

I really hope this review helps you find your answer:I have tried so many methods and products to deal with the granules (like sand) that form on my scalp and cause itching. Expensive salon products, moisturizing my scalp, letting it air dry, baking soda, apple cider vinegarâ¦NOTHING worked, until my new dermatologist told me to try alternating 1 shampoo with coal tar for 3 weeks with another shampoo with salicylic acid for 3 weeks.True+Real has coal tar and appears to be very similar to Neutrogenaâs T-Gel, but T+R has a higher concentration of coal tar.Iâm still in my first 3-week session with True+Real, washing every 2-3 days. Wow! What a difference! I used to start getting sandy buildup by the evening when I wash in the morning. By day 3, I was an itchy wreck, with oily hair to boot.Now, my hair stays clean and shiny for 3 days and I kinda, sorta start to feel a little itching by that time. Iâm sure if I shampooed every other day, thereâd be minimal symptoms.Dermatologist said to wash every day – thatâs not gonna happen, but I do wash/rinse/repeat and let the shampoo sit on my hair for the 2nd application while I do other âshower things.â So far, so good!!Iâm eager to see what happens when I switch to the salicylic acid shampoo starting this weekend.Tips:1. It does smell like monster truck tires, at first, but that scent dwindles at it dries. If youâre going somewhere and donât want any trace of that scent, wash it the night before.2. Do make sure to do 2 shampoo cycles, letting the shampoo sit 3-4 minutes on your hair during one of them. My hair stays clean so much longer!!)3. BE CAREFUL not to get it in your eyes. I use this product a few times and now my bathtub is starting to turn tannish brown from the product. I thought at first Maybe it was something else but I scrubbed the tub and put a brand new bath mat and it’s discoloring it again turning it tannish brown therefore I finally figured out that it’s the shampoo. I’m used to using Neutrogena t-gel and it got discontinued therefore I bought the true and real brand maximum strength and I have to use it at least two to three times a week as opposed to the other one once a week. It’s an okay product but I don’t like it discoloring my tub and mat.

It works even if it smells
Coal tar is a proven ingredient, even if it smells. Stops the itch, just soak 5-10 minutes. Once you wash it out, smell is gone. Enough for many medicated shampoos. Well worth the money. Iâve purchased several this year from them.

Stinky but works
I bought this as a compliment to the T-Sal shampoo I bought a few weeks ago. This stuff works very well at controlling my itchiness and excessive flakes. But be warned- it does smell like jet fuel or like your hair has been set on fire or something. Like others have suggested, Iâve been using it and showering the night before work to give the smell time to dissipate. But after using it just for four days now, my hair is already looking much fuller and healthier! Will be buying again!

This stuff STINKS. All Coal Tar Shampoos have some odor, but this gets top price. Your scalp will be clean, but you’re gonna smell like a coal mine.
