A four-step program to restore the gastrointestinal system including recipes and meal plans: “A trove of health and life-enhancing information.” —David Perlmutter, MD, #1 New York Times–bestselling authorof Grain Brain
Dr. Vincent Pedre understands gut problems firsthand. He suffered from IBS for years before becoming an expert in functional medicine and learning how to heal his body from the inside. Dr. Pedre used his own experience to develop the Gut C.A.R.E. program—an approach that draws from both Western and Eastern methodologies, combining integrative and functional medicine—that has a proven success record in his private practice in New York. Now, for the first time, Dr. Pedre makes his revolutionary plan for health and wellness available to everyone.
Happy Gut takes you step-by-step through Gut C.A.R.E.—Cleanse, Activate, Restore, and Enhance—which eliminates food triggers, clears the gut of unfriendly pathogens, and replaces them with healthy probiotics and nutrients that repair and heal the gut. Rather than masking symptoms with medication, he shows us how to address the problem at its core to restore the gastrointestinal system to its proper functioning state. By fixing problems in the gut, followers of Dr. Pedre’s program have found that their other health woes are also cured and have lost weight, gained energy, and improved seemingly unrelated issues, such as seasonal allergies, bad skin, and fatigue, in addition to eliminating their chronic muscle and abdominal pain.
Complete with recipes and meal plans including gluten-free, low-fat, and vegetarian options, a twenty-eight-day gut cleanse, and yoga postures to help digestion, Happy Gut will help you feel better and eliminate gut issues for life.

Dr. David Perlmutter talks with Dr. Vincent Pedre
Dr. David Perlmutter is the New York Times number-one-bestselling author of Grain Brain and Brain Maker.
Dr. David Perlmutter (DP): What inspired you to write Happy Gut?
Dr. Vincent Pedre (VP): Growing up I had a ‘weak’ stomach and was more susceptible to respiratory infections, contracting bronchitis or sinusitis at least three to four times a year. Without being aware, I was eating foods that I was sensitive to, which wore out my immune system, leaving me susceptible to infections. Over the years, I improved my health through diet. However, it wasn’t until I studied Functional Medicine that I realized what an important and central role the gut plays in overall health.
When I incorporated Functional Medicine into my practice, my success with patients’ digestive disorders exploded. Their guts got better, and so did secondary conditions related to their gut disharmony—like fatigue, weight gain, allergies, asthma, mental fog, and migraines. It made sense that what I once considered a crux—growing up with a sensitive digestive system—was actually the gift that led me to help others heal their gut issues.
DP: How is Happy Gut different from other books on gut health?
VP: Happy Gut offers a whole foods–based cleanse, guided by my Gut C.A.R.E. Program, to rebalance a disordered digestive system—the gateway to total wellness. But it’s not just about changing what you eat. It’s about changing the way you live—incorporating daily gratitude, slowing down to appreciate and chew your food, and making time for movement and meditation. It also brings attention to the importance of drinking clean water, cooking on non-toxic surfaces, and using green utensils. Total-body wellness is achieved through this 360-degree approach to our well-being.
DP: Why is the Functional Medicine approach most successful, especially regarding digestive issues?
VP: The problem with the Western model, when it comes to digestive issues, is that it is symptom-centered. But symptoms are often misleading. Functional Medicine is the opposite—all-encompassing. It looks at the body as a system, much like a conductor views his orchestra. If the violins are on the wrong key, and the drums off beat, then the orchestra as a whole does not produce harmony. If systems in the body are out of tune, then the body as a whole will not function optimally. By understanding and identifying multiple imbalances happening simultaneously and providing the treatments that will help the digestive system reboot itself, Functional Medicine allows a patient’s body to reach a state of harmony.
DP: What can readers expect to learn from Happy Gut?
VP: Readers will learn why the gut is so central to our well-being. Gut health is connected to weight gain—eliminating food sensitivities on the Happy Gut Diet results in markedly reduced bloating and increased weight loss. Through my Gut C.A.R.E. Program, readers will make a four-week commitment to wellness and be guided through a twenty-eight–day cleanse. Recipes that appeal to all types of dietary preferences and meal plans are provided, in addition to yoga poses for gut health, meditation instruction, and breathing exercises. For those who need to look deeper, an entire chapter is devoted to uncovering the root causes of common and not-so-common gut ailments, providing suggested tests and treatment strategies. Happy Gut is a roadmap leading readers to total body wellness, providing tools to get back on course when your gut health gets off track.

Life Changing-The Future of Mainstream Medicine
I was never overweight (in fact Iâve always been very lean), athletic training, no junk food â but had severe digestive issues for 6 years and developed an autoimmune condition for the last 2 of those years. I live in New York City, had access to great doctors, but all the âtraditionalâ doctors, as well meaning as they were, determined that it was stress. A friend of mine who is in the nutrition field suggested that it might be the food I was eating – but I protested because I ate âhealthyâ – whole wheat pasta and bread, salads for takeout with low fat everything â Ha! I saw Dr. Pedre on Good Morning America and was curious so I purchased the book which advocates a Paleo type diet â no wheat, grains, lots of healthy fats, grass fed beef, organic as much as possible and absolutely no processed foods. In 4 weeks my digestive issues disappeared by about 90% and my autoimmune condition improved by about 40%. As a result of reading the book, I decided to see Dr. Pedre and do further testing. The results were clear â Candida overgrowth. I have now been on an antifungal, probiotic and enzyme prescribed by Dr. Pedre â all very inexpensive â and yes, you can get the supplements anywhere, not just from his website. (FYI – The reason that I do use his website is because the products are guaranteed fresh. Too many times I have purchased through various online sites and have had issues with freshness for supplements.) My autoimmune condition is about 80% better and digestive issues are just about completely gone. We are aiming for full autoimmune remission. All this started from reading the book â believe me â itâs real.Yes â it is more expensive to buy organic food and grass fed beef, but it was more expensive for me to take the medications I was given along with all the doctors visits and tests that I had gone through for 6 years â and it didnât make me feel any better. Our processed food chain is poisoning people. And no â itâs not hard to follow the diet in the book. First of all itâs not a diet because I eat a lot â rather itâs getting back to nutrient dense, healthy food. I am a partner in a business and work many hours but you make time to cook properly and pick the quicker meals â how long does it take to broil an organic chicken breast (with the skin) and defrost organic vegetables and make a sweet potato. Nuts and fruit for snacks â not a big deal in terms of time.I would strongly suggest that you read the book â it can change your life. Functional medicine is where the future is. It isnât voodoo, but good science from a medical doctor associated with one of the best hospitals in New York City who understands that we are what we eat.

Change Your Life!
As soon as I began to read this book I knew that this Happy Gut program was for me. Generally healthy, but not feeling optimal, the idea of finding out how your body reacts to certain foods in order to improve your wellbeing made perfect sense. A tremendous coffee, sugar, and wheat/bread addict, not drinking coffee for 28 days was my greatest challenge. I was serious about following the program and was able to eliminate everything that may have had an negative impact on my health. Prior to starting the detox I had been experiencing aid reflux. After completion of the program I no longer have any symptoms. I lost weight without counting calories, lost 3 inches off my waist, joint pain was gone, and even my skin looked better. I not only followed the program but also purchased the products that Dr. Pedre recommends in the book. That really made life easier. All of the supplements and a daily breakfast shake (nutritional, cleansing, protein powder) were included in the package along with a pamphlet that summarizes the book and facilitates use.Once I completed the detox phase of Happy Gut, I began the reintroduction of foods that I had eliminated for the 28 days. I’m still in that process, very slowly reconsidering some of the digestive villains I used to enjoy, but generally feeling so much better than I had prior to the program. Instead of the cleansing shake I’m now using another product from Happy Gut called Maintain. It’s excellent, and really keeps you full for quite some time. I’m continuing to lose weight and haven’t restricted calories since beginning Happy Gut. This is a serious lifestyle change, but the benefits are well worth giving up the foods that cause health issues. Give yourself some love and try this program! The support is amazing. Thank you Dr. Pedre!

Very good, but with some reservations
After reading the author in the NY Times, we got the book for our kindles. There was a lot of good information in this book, but I did have a few concerns after reading it. One is that Dr. Pedre seems to feel the happy gut is the end-all be-all. It reminded me of the old Chiropractic days, when aligning the spine was promoted as the magic cure for world peace and all that ails you. I’m confident that there is a lot of truth in what Dr. Pedre says, but anytime I see something put down in such absolutes, it brings out the skeptic in me. As well, the constant references to the Happy Gut on-line store made me think of the great line, “show me the money,” which just once again brought out the skeptic in me. That said, the I do believe that the basic premise of the book is right on target, and I believe Dr. Pedre makes good arguments as to why the modern diet is failing us. I have not yet tried the 28 day purge, but I know two people who have done similar purges, with mixed results. One found no real noticeable change in health, but the other lost some weight and found a big improvements in her joints.

Decided to have a go at this a couple of months ago. I cut out processed sugar, alcohol, dairy, wheat / gluten and other foods on the banned list, including potatoes and fruit (other than berries). It probably sounds like hell, but when you look at the foods you can eat, things look a lot brighter. You can have a steak and sweet potato chips for example, not to mention your fill of veg, wild fish and certain types of nut. I did the month and felt marvelous. I shed almost a stone without once feeling hungry, got rid of the energy crashes I’d been experiencing and also started waking up without the aches and pains I’d previously put down to ‘age’. Better still, I haven’t gone back to the sweets, biscuits and bread since. I’m still following the plan, albeit with a couple of glasses of wine or cider per week. I feel way too good to give that feeling up! If you want to feel better and / or lose weight, this is a very good book to buy.
